One word to sum up VH1’s You Oughta Know concert, would be AMAZING. Every year, this concert series introduces new artist and their music to the world by “class” and this year fans were introduced to the class of 2014. With performances from Tove Lo, Vance Roy, Chvrches, Kongos, Echosmith, American Authors, A Great Big World, Sam Smith, Aloe Blacc, Mary Lambert, and Bleachers this concert was nothing shy of perfection. Sponsored by 1iota, this free event took place in Manhattan’s own Hammerstein Ballroom located on 34th street between 8th and 9th avenues.
With a list of excellent performers, who would’ve thought that this event would be full of surprises? From the star studded presenters like Alicia Keys, Rob Thomas, Darren Criss (Glee), Nick Lachey, Nick Jonas and the legendary divas of music Chaka Khan and Debbie Harring, to Nicole Richie, who not only hosted the show but also gave the audience a special performance alongside NaughtybyNature’s own Treach, as her alter ego Nikki Fre$h

Each artist proved to the audience why they were a part of class of 2014, starting with Sam Smith. The soulful singer, who first graced us with his outstanding voice on Disclosure’s Latch in 2011, opened the show with his number 1 hit, Stay with me. Not only did he do a phenomenal job with this performance but he showed out with his second performance of the night with I’m not the only one. Sam Smith also won the award for best new artist of the year. What a big night it was for him!.
Aloe Blacc, wowed the crowd with his single I’m the man. His voice is one of the unique ones in the music world. He was introduced to us, om Aviici’s hit single Wake me up,  and now he his venturing onto his own solo projects.
Mary Lambert, first came onto the music scene on Macklemore and Ryan Lewis’s Same Love, the infamous for equal rights mesaage amongst the homosexual community. Since then, Lambert has released  her first solo single “Secrets”. The bubbly, upbeat song sends a message of being yourself, and to never be ashamed  of the person you once was because it helped you become the person you are now.
Tove Lo, Chvrches, Vance Joy, American Authors, A Great Big World, and The Kongos, “the newcomers”, set the bar high for the nominees for next year’s YOK class. Each performer gave the audience that raw/rare interaction that is greatly  missed at most concerts. Performing there smash singles, each artist will be around for long time.
The show ended just as it started with an amazing closing performance from Bleachers. The band, created by FUN’s own Jack Antonoff, gave two amazing performances. First song was the hit I wanna get better,  the second was a cover of Go your own way, that featured Laura Mayberry (lead singer of Chvrches). All in all this concert experience is one for the record books.
Check out clips and performances of YOK on the VH1 website.
